Creativity
I wanted to begin by talking about creativity, the feelings I get from the word, and how I express myself. Often I’ll feel this emotion build up inside and the only way to get it out is by creating something physical I put those emotions into. I feel that I can’t put the word to what exactly I’m feeling but if I create a collage or a painting for instance, I get some emotional satisfaction out of what I've created. Other times, it's almost like a physical need to create, like an itch that needs to be scratched. Sometimes, I’ll create because it's a practice that needs attention in one way or another. I’ve found that indulging in other’s creations can even fulfill my need to find creativity. I love watching movies and listening to music and have found immense inspiration in the film and music industries. I believe that creativity can be found anywhere really, you just have to be looking with intention.
My next desire is to cover my creative process when it comes to creating my collages to give insight into how my creations come to fruition. I always start by putting something on as my background noise, most of the time I’ll play music but, occasionally I’ll listen to a podcast or have the T.V. on the back. My next goal is to find images to use I’ll flip through many of the materials I use and take note of images I find striking me that day. After finding many images, I'll create a story in my head, and begin narrowing down the images to a select few I want to use. I then lay out my images on the paper how I feel fit best as if I’m storyboarding my final product. Next, I begin pasting my images to the paper in the places they must go to create the final collage. When the collage is finished, I’ll scan it so I have a digital copy and the process is complete. Overall it usually takes an hour to two hours to create each collage but I am always proud of the final piece I create because I know I created something new that day.
Finally, I felt I should touch on my current favorite work and inspiration. The first piece of work I wanted to talk about was MF DOOM’s “MM..Food”. The producer and rapper had an eclectic use of samples throughout the album. using multiple samples for each song many times. In listening to songs like Gumbo, Guinnesses, and Vomitspit you hear Doom shuffling through and connecting samples creating what becomes a collage for the ears. The creativity in the music production of the album is unique, unlike anything I’d heard from another artist before or since. I've been a fan since high school but it wasn’t until I began taking my art seriously that the pieces of each track stuck out to me. Like I’ve said before, you should be looking for creativity with intention and I wasn’t until recently. Thankfully when I looked with intention, I found inspiration and it helped motivate me to create and hone my style.
Bar Jawn, Manayunk Review!
On the corner of Main Street and Station Street in Manayunk, you will find Bar Jawn, a casual, walk-in style bar and restaurant that serves fun drinks and upscale bar food. The restaurant lends itself to an intimate environment that will always be filled with Philly sports fans on gameday. However, because they do not take reservations, and their restaurant does not have too many tables, you may have to wait a bit. The restaurant does have outdoor seating if the weather allows for it! I went on a Tuesday around 8pm and had no issue getting sat immediately. The staff were extremely friendly, we spoke with our waitress about the Phillies who had just fallen to 0-2 against the Dodgers and we also spoke with the bartender who was very nice when she brought us our drinks. Once our orders were placed, I had a moment to look at the decor of the restaurant. The walls were covered in photos of patrons who would come in to enjoy games which I found to be a nice way to incorporate the community into a restaurant, especially a newer one as Bar Jawn is fairly new to the neighborhood. As I was looking at the decor our food had already come out, I looked at my phone to see how long we had been waiting and it only took about 8 minutes for the appetizer to come out which I found to be incredibly fast. We ordered cheesesteak eggrolls for our appetizer and received 4 ½ eggrolls for 17.68 which I thought was expensive for how much food we got. We both ordered the smash burger and the price of each burger was 18.72 which I found to be a bit more reasonable than the eggrolls. The egg rolls and the burgers were absolutely delicious and very well prepared. The ambiance of the restaurant was great as customers seemed to be getting along with each other, even ones that did not know each other, and the staff was incredibly friendly and got our food and drinks out to us faster than any restaurant I’ve ever been to. The only downside of Bar Jawn I saw was the price. In total with food and drinks, we ended up spending 66.27 with a 20% tip added on top. I had a good experience at Bar Jawn and would consider returning.
